  1. 1. My motivation to attend a HBCU was the fact that I can relate to the students and the professors.

    2. I have noticed that I learn better and more one on one than I would in a group.

    3. Based on my learning style I plan to pay close attention while the professor is teaching. Therefore, I will leave my cell phone in my dorm room and not sit by my friends. I also plan study the material daily.

  2. 1. My motivations in selecting to attend a HBCU were to be in an environment that I am most comfortable in and to be in an evironment where I actually feel like more than a number.

    2. After determining verbal-linguistic learning style, I've noticed that understanding syntax and meaning of words is a good way for me to learn and retain things.

    3. Based on my learning style, I know that I must take pretty good notes. I need to read a lot and comprehend well. I should try to make sure I have mastered material by how well I can explain it to others.

  3. 1. My motivation in selecting an HBCU to attend college was I wanted the “black college experience”. To get an understanding of the history and culture that comes with attending an HBCU. As well as become part of a legacy of great scholars who attended HBCU’s. There could be more things an HBCU can offer me as an African American than a public college or university.

    2. The fallacies/consistencies I noticed in my learning style were that there can changes and alternatives that I can do to help me learn better with my particular style of learning.

    3. My study plan involves doing things that will make my learning experience a lot easier so that I can develop better study habits. Things such as reflect on personal meanings of information, develop graphic organizers, and recite information or write scripts study in quiet settings, and
discuss information. These ideas can help me better retain the information I am learning.

  4. Tequila, based on the learning style assessment on page 42 of your text what was your learning style?

  5. Jessica, i like your comment about being a part of the legacy. You'll have a chance to expand more on that in Week 2.

  6. I NEVER HAD ANY REAL AMBITION TO ATTEND AN HBCU. I DESIRED A QUALITY EDUCATION, AND I KNEW I COULD GET THAT AT DILLARD UNIVERSITY.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Lauren,
How does attending a HBCU make you feel like more than a number? If you compare that to your perception of another kind of University how is is different?

    ReplyDelete
  8. So what elements do you consider to be characteristic of a quality education?

    ReplyDelete
  9. 1. I never had any motivation to attend a HBCU, but DU has offered me the opportunity to experience culture and history and what going to a black university is all about. My sister graduated from Howard University and she would tell me what it is like to attend a black college. She loved it and I think I will love it also.

    2. Even though I dont have the book, I have always thought that visual and tactile has always been my learning styles. I learn best when I see it and when I try it for myself. I have a hard time just listening to what the teacher has to say and remembering what they've said. But in an environment where the teacher just talks, I believe I will learn when I read before and I participate in discussions.

    3. I can ask my teachers to assign days for when they can have notes on the projector that I can copy or have students in teacher and class discussions. Something that really gets me involved and wanting more.

  10. Tre27,

In what way does Dillard University offer you a quality education compared to other unversities that may have researched or heard about?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Im Andrew Tadros

    1. I was motivated to attend an HBCU because I was born and raised around African Americans such as myself and found them to be more hospitable than anyone. The love shown at an HBCU cannot be compared to a normal university. My advisors in high school recommended a number of HBCU's and told me they would be a great place to learn because its so much easier when people who care about you are teaching you and when you're in an environment you can relate to.

    2. I do not have the book either but it has been clear to me from the start that being hands on is my learning style. My memory isnt great but when i can get into something and physically relate to it i find it much easier to learn.

    3. My main study plans are examples. Reading is a must but i try to focus on the main aspects of what is being taught. Note cards and studying aloud in a group are also favored ways of studying. I enjoy studying but find it much easier to do it while interacting with others.

  12. Lauren L.,

I agree when you want to be considered more than a number because at colleges such as LSU and UNO there are sooo many students in the classes that the professors dont take time out to get to know their students. Just another number.

    cherish_destinee,

Nothing may have motivated you to attend an HBCU but since you did what made you choose Dillard of all others?

    jessica1291,

The whole understanding of history and culture is sooo important because some people dont even know some of the great things that came to be were bought to us by African Americans and HBCU's.

Once tou take the assessment on learning styles in you book pg. 42, you can use the information to discuss with your teachers the ways you learn best. This may become a part of their regular teaching pattern.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Lauren L , Andrew, and Tequila I completly agree with all of you guy's in take on why choosing to attend an HBCU.

As far as Tre and Cherish why did u come to an HBCU if you had no motivation? why didnt you choose another school..what was your purpose in coming to DU?...There are lots of good schools...there must be something that led you to dillard

    ReplyDelete
  16. I'm Cherish

    Jessica,

I chose DU because it was my only choice. I had a rough time through high school and I would not like to address it please. I didnt finish high school, but I obtained my GED and DU still let me attend the summer program and allowed me to attend DU in the fall. I am grateful that Dillard is my choice for school, I love being here and the people as well.

  17. I'm Cherish

    Andrew,

As I said to Jessica, DU was my only choice but I'm glad Du is giving me the opportunity and I have no interest in any other school

  18. DU 901 on my comment,

One of my professors just recently told me a story similar to your suggestion. She told me that she always came to her professor for help in college and asked all the questions she needed answers to. In due time that professor began to teach in a manner that would answer all of her questions which were questions that the other students had.

  19. Andrew,

Have you ever thought about being in an environment where you may not be comfortable, but the purpose of being in such an environment is to learn how to adapt to it and learn from it to make you better? Ive been placed in many uncomfortable and unreasonable environment, but I've learned to adapt and I know how to handle it if it happens again.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Lauren L,

What about DU's environment that makes you feel comfortable? Is it because a large percentage of the students are black or is it because of the teachers and staff? Compared to other universities, why is it different for you to feel like an actual student, than a number here at Dillard University?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Shautera Clofer,
1.In the beginning my motivation was not to attend a HBCU, to be honest I had no clue as to what college to attend. I heard about dillard through my high school, and well lets just say i couldn't have picked a better University. Dillard has alot of culture and heritage to offer, and I look forward to learning about it's background.

2.After determining my learning style I find that i enjoy working with other people, and I learn better if i take notes and study. I think that I'm more of a visual learner as well, and that i don't mind helping others out.

3.Based upon my learning style my study plan would be to take notes during class, find a study buddy, and take some time out by myself to study for at least an hour.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Shautera

Do you think your plan will be really effective or do you consider this as a test to see what works for you?

  23. 1.MY REASON FOR COMING TO A HBCU IS BECAUSE, I LIKE BEING AROUND MY STRONG BLACK PEOPLE. I FEEL WE HAVE THAT BROTHER AND SISTERHOOD WE CANT GET FROM OTHER SCHOOL.

2.I NOTICE THAT I TEND TO WANDER AND GET OFF TRACK SOMETHING. MY LEARNING STYLE IS USALLY CRAM CRAM CRAM...WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE TO COMPLETE SOME ASSIGNMENTS.

3.STAY ON TRACK, STOP WANTING TO GO OUT AND PARTY, AND ASK FOR HELP. I TEND TO BE SHY AND DONT ASK FOR HELP

    ReplyDelete
  24. Chermaine,

What other reasons made you choose Dillard? What benefits are given to you here as a DU student that you could not find anywhere else?

    ReplyDelete
  25. 1. To be honest, when I was searching for a university to attend it didn't matter whether it was an HBCU or an ordinary university. I was just seeking a quality education. Now that I am a student at Dillard University, I am proud of my decision. After thinking about the positive things that a young African American student can get out of an HBCU, i realized that an HBCU can prepare you for the real world. It also teaches us about our background and where African Americans came from. It teaches us about the trials and tribulations that our ancestors faced in order for us to receive a quality education.

    2. Although I haven't received the book, I have always waited until the last minute to do things. What helps me is reading and understanding what I am reading as well as being able to visualize what I am learning.

    3. My study plan would be to take notes and read over what I have written. Everyday I would read over my notes.I will always put my work ahead of the less important things.

  28. Chazley,

Thank you so much for sharing your past. It is important to see that we all come from different places and end up here.

Just to let you know I too got a GED, and went to a HBCU. in doing so I learned so much about the subject matter and me.

I also learned that telling your story could be the single thing that helps someone else along. Never be ashamed of the path you have taken, only be ashamed if you cease to continue on.

  29. To All,

Who has had achance to speak with other faculty and staff to learn what their stories were? You just may find more things in common than you think.

    1. My motivation to attend an HBCU was the heritage and honor they as a group share. HBCus are an asset I believe to the black community. They were all we as a people had at one point and though there are more options today, I know that I'm at an HBCu because I'm proud to say that I attend one.\

    2. The consistencies I noticed are that I have my own form of learning and shaping information into a way that I understand. I also noticed that I learn better by myself when reciting information and can teach people in a way that they can understand as well.

    3. My study plan is to take small notes in calss and rewrite them after rereading the chapter in my room. I'll then take a break probably a nap or eat and then go in a quiet area and analyze the information I've acquired.

  31. Chardai Grays Du 901.005

    1. My motivation to attend an HBCU was the fact that I would be taught and surrounded by people from my culture. I believe that if i would have went to an majority white institute I would just be fulfilling a quota.

    2. I am logical- mathematical. Math and science are my favorite subjects there is a clear and concise answer, most of the time.

    3. My study plan is to take very detailed notes, then re-type them over to make sure that I understand them. Most of the time, I will take a 15 minute break every hour.

    ReplyDelete
  32. 1. My motivation for selecting a HBCU was made after attending a high school where blacks were considered a minority. I wanted to come around people like myself, and get the HBCU experience. At an HBCU I am also able to learn more about my culture, from my culture.

    2. I've noticed that I tend to procrastinate before doing my work. I have also noticed that I understand the material better when I go over it at home, rather than in class.

    3. My study plan would be to review my notes after each class period, therefore eliminating the need to cram for a test at the last minute. I also plan to take very detailed notes in class, because I've learned that some things that the teacher mentions aren't in the book. Last, but not least, I plan to give each subject equal attention and study without distractions.

    ReplyDelete
  33. To Lauren,
I agree with your study plan. I think that if you follow through with this you will excel in your major

    ReplyDelete
  34. 1. My motivation in attending a HBCU college was the enjoyment of going to school with all my people. I was always told by Alumni's of HBCU colleges is that there is nothing like it; the love and support from everyone is outstanding. That is why I chose to go to a HBCU school.

    2. I learned that I am a visual learner. I learn best on demonstrations rather than being told what to do. If I see it being done it makes more sense to me. In high school I also learned that if I just payed attention in class I didn't have to study. College may be different for me although.

    3. My study plans are:

    A) Pay as much attention in class as possible(try not to space out in class).

    B) Take really good notes.

    C) Talk with my classmates to see how they interpret instructions and readings.

    ReplyDelete
  35. 1. My selection to attend a HBCU was motivated by my past experiences. I graduated from a historically African-America high school and became somewhat "comfortable". Although a change would have been nice,i strongly feel that a learning experience is much easier when you are in a class of your own race.

2.After determining my learning style, I noticed that get bored easily with work. During the same kinds of math problems or reading about the same thing for hours tend to lose my attention. Therefore I am a listener,I learn much better by listening and by the professor using examples.

3.My study plan is as follows:
    A. Read ahead and make my own notes.

    B. When I get in class I take notes based what the professor says and compare them with my own.
    C. Read over them everyday or make flash cards.

    ReplyDelete
  36. 1. My motivation for choosing an HBCU was easy. I knew that I wanted to be around people who could relate to me in almost every situation. I chose DU because I love the City of NO. Being from California, I wanted to experience something different. By choosing an HBCU, I figured I could gain more knowledge by being around young educated African Americans, versus being in a melting pot.

    2. Being that I haven't recieved the book just yet, I know that I am a HUGE procrastinator. I personally feel that I do my best work when I procrastinate. I know that's not the best way to go about everything, but that's what I need to work on the most.

    3. Based on my learning styles, I know that I get easily distracted by my phone. By this I know that 1)I need to keep my phone far away as possible. 2) time management. 3)take as many notes as I can, then go over everything later that night.

    1. My motivation for choosing a HBCU was the fact that i get to learn more about my culture. Also, i chose to attend a HBCU because i know that i am apart of the majority and not looked at as a minority.

    2. I noticed that i learn better doing hands on activities.

    3. My Study Plan
    1. Take good notes
    2. Do not be afraid to ask questions
    3. stay organized

    ReplyDelete
  38. @Alexandria Moore..I agree with you and the whole procrastination thing. Its difficult for me to get something done when its due.

@Chardai Grays..I feel what your saying about the going to the majority white school. I felt the same way when it was time for me to apply to schools. I wanted to be somewhere where I knew I would be most comfortable at, and a black school was what I needed.

@tre27...Why'd you pick DU if all you wanted was a "quality education"? If that was the case, couldn't you have went somewhere else? What's the real reason as to why you chose DU, because I'm sure that there's more to it.

    ReplyDelete
  39. To Chazley

As of now I'm not sure if it will be effective or not so I guess you can say its more of a test rather to see if it will be successful or not

  40. 1. I have always wanted to attended a HBCU. The reason (s) for me wanting to attend a HBCU was me being able to relate with others of my kind in some type of way. I wanted to feel comfortable and be a part of the DU family. I feel that all of the faulcty and staff members could help me mature and grow to be successful within my four years at the university. My motivation was the fact that DU was the first university to have a nursing program in louisiana and it has been successful with high numbers every since. I want to be one of these young African American ladies who will graduate with the class of 2013, with the help of DU's wonderful instructors.

    2. I have realized that i am a visual learner. I would feel more comfortable learner something seeing it. I get bored easily, it would be better for me to stay focus with material visually instead of listening.

    3.

    1.) Organization
    2.) Take notes

  41. Bianca Young,

    1) My motivation to attend a HBCU was based on my desire to be surrounded by individuals similar to myself. I find it much easier to work around and especially with others I can relate with.

    2) Unfortunately I have not purchased the required text book. However it has always been clear to me that I comperhend things better when hearing them verbally, and I work better alone.

    3) Based on my learning and perferred studying style I encourage my fellow classmates to *stay organized, *take detailed notes in every class, and *go over their notes/information daily.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Bianca,
I agree with you 100% on why you chose to attend a HBCU. I'm right there too.

    Dominique,
I like your study plan. It's similar to mine in some ways. I have to remember not to be afraid to ask questions, and everything always works better when you're organized.

    Alexandria,
I have noticed that I too, tend to procrastinate rather than to get things done right away. I also find it easier going over things in my spare time instead of trying to do it in class.

  43. 1.)
What was your motivation in your selection to attend a HBCU?
Historically Black College and Universities (HBCU) have always been a one of my goals and aspirations to be part of. Coming from California in which there are neither HBCU’s nor institutions of higher education who have a large presents of African American students. Being able to apply to a HBCU and reverse that California static was simply amazing. Coming from a predominantly African American and Hispanic high school who struggled to keep the state from taking over, I knew I had to get out of Pasadena. Attending a HBCU would challenge me academically and emotionally, being around other motivated African American students and faculty success will not be an option, which is what I strive for.

2.) After determining your learning style, what did fallacies or consistencies did you notice? through the taking of this survey I have realized that I am both a musical and interpersonal learner. I do believe that these two learning styles fit me as a person.

3.) Develop a study plan based on your learning style. Posted 3 suggested activites for your style.

a.) Put new Material to songs I already know
    b.) Visualize information/keep a journal
    c.) Imagine experiments

    ReplyDelete
  44. Tiffany- I know what you mean coming from the Los Anegeles area. There is not motivation for African American Students to go to HBCU's because we are always told to stay local and attend " white" schools ( csun, sfsu, sdsu, etc.)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Dominique- What was your learning style?

Misha- your thrid learnig technique is really good, I think its always good to be open minded and value others opinions/beliefs

    ReplyDelete
  46. )I always knew I wanted to attend an HBCU. I'm originally from Louisiana and I grew up around people who attended HBCUs. Dillard was a Liberal Arts HBCU that I wanted to attend.

2)I'm the type of person who learns best through lecture. However, the lecture must have other elements other than someone just speaking. If a teacher stands and speaks for an hour or two without any visual or other elements to their lecture, they tend to lose my attention.

    3) A study plan for me would consist or nighting reading of the subjects talked about in class that day and also creating my own visual aids.

    ReplyDelete
  47. 1. Thought my high school career I was always informed that there was no college experience like an HBCU experience. As people told me this, I started to perform research, comparing the many HBCU across the nation to the top Ivey league Colleges and Universities. From my research I discovered that the education received at a HBCU is exactly the same if not better of that at an Ivey league institution. At a big university, it is said that students are nothing but a number, another face in the crowd lost within the system. It is also said that at big universities, teachers focus more on their book signings than teaching their students. I would have rather attend a small institution with a small student to teacher ratio, who radiated an atmosphere that is conductive to learning.

    2. I’m more of a social/interpersonal learner. I prefer to work in large groups, and discuss various view and approaches on topics. As well as that, I’m a very analytical thinker and I like to approach ideas in different ways than others. I enjoy listening to other people ways of solving problems.

    3. Each day around 6, a group of peers will meet to discuss their in class discussions and homework. Their discussion will revolve around three activates that will aid them in understanding their curriculum. The activities will revolve around flash cards and group discussions. The fist activity will use the flash cards as a means of understanding, mainly definition purposes. The second activity will revolve around a group discussion of the definitions and information brought forth in the in class discussion. The third activity will focus on reading the material. It will be a popcorn game and after reading the material, you popcorn it to the next person.

  48. I totally agree with all my collegues..
1).A HBCU is mostly where black people feel comfortable. It's where most of our kinds are teachers, students, cooks, etc.I always wanted to attend a HBCU because I know what type of person I am and I know with type of learning environment I want to be in. I want to come where I felt combortable at.
2)I have noticed that I learn better when I focus and not bored. I also noticed that I learn better when the teacher teachs on my level where I can understand the texts.
3)A study plan for me would in a group of bilogy majors listening to music and attractive involve in the subject at hand.

  57. 1. My motivation in my selection to attend a HBCU was simple. I wanted to be surrounded by people who had the same struggles that I have. At an HBCU, I can be more comfortable talking about certain topics that I may not have talked about at other colleges, such as racial issues.

    2. After finding out my learning style, I have learned that I will do better if I study in a group or if I read out loud to myself.

3.My learning style would be Verbal Interaction, the activiites would be as follows: 1) Ask atleast the same question to 4 different people and see how many different responses you get. 2) read a chapter of your book with a friend. 3) while walking to class , talk about what you learned in your previous class.

    ReplyDelete
  58. My motivation to attend a HBCU was influenced by the history of my family, my origin, and also the fact that I wanted to get out of California. My last name originates from New Orleans, Louisianna and I will be able to meet family I have never met and also, get a quality education at the same time.

My learning style turned out to be visual. I've always thought i was more of a auditory learner, like as far as listening to lectures and taking notes at the same time. That method has served me well for some years.

My study plan according to my learning style results would be to pay attention to whats on the board more, during classes and maybe even make flashcards to look at.Also study groups are always good.

I didn't really have any particular reason to attend an HBCU over the average college but, i took it upon myself to choose a black college because i felt my learning expeience would be greater if i experieced it with people who looked like me.

After determining my learning style as being an interpersonal learner. The way i have been most successful in my studies for the fist time were brought to my attention, and now i undersand why. Such as flashcards and studying with small groups of people.
The study plan i have developed is to continue to study with small study groups, teach others what i have learned, and by making flashcards.

    2. I notice that I learn better by doing. I sometimes will drift off into another world when I am supposed to be learning. I also know I need to learn more efficient ways to study.

    3. I plan to take two hours out of everyday to study. I am going to use my computer to organize the notes I need to study. I also will make flash cards and other tools to help me concentrate more.

  66. to be honest i really didnt know DU was an hbcu....
The only reason I picked it was mainly because it was close to my mother and the rest of my family.
I am an interpersonal type meaning I like to see thingd from other ppls perspective, I can work in a group, communicate both verbally and nonverbally and I also keep constant relationships.
My study techniques include: groups, big dicussions, flashcards, & teaching someone else.

  67. #1) My motivation to attend a HBCU is the experience. I come from a place where there is much diversity as far as culture, food, ethnicity, backgrounds, problems, habits, physical attributes and many others. All of the schools that I've attended before college has had a misrepresentation of African Americans students in numbers, test scores, grades and population. I wanted to come to a school where I could be surrounded by the people that I not only share the same ethnicity with, but people that weren't the stereotypical minority but the empowered, intelligent and educated majority.

#2) I noticed that I am a mathmatically logical thinker, but still have tendencies to be intrapersonal. I evaluate my own thinking, think and reason on high levels, undersatnd myself in relationship to others perspectives and cooperate in groups.

#3) I plan to stay focused and constantly reassure myself of my ultimate purpose of being here at Dillard University, to academically succeed without any boundaries. I am a reclusive young woman, but I intend to do different things to branch myself out. Three suggested activities for my style would be self projects, think and reasoning to teach others, and complex reasoning problems.

  69. 1. My motivation to attend an HBCU was the instilling of my culture and heritage as well as to be a remider of just how far we as black people have come.

2.Although i work well lone, i have also realized that group settings also give me opputunities for better understanding in certain areas.

    3. -Stay focused
    - mangae my time wisely
    - don't be afraid to ask for help

  70. 1. My motivation to become a student at a HBCU was the many times in history when African Americans were denied an education. There have been numerous instances when schools were segregated and black could not attend schools with white children. This was occurring in elementary and high schools. It can be inferred that blacks were also not welcomed in establishments of higher education. Now there are over 100 HBCUs which openly welcome and encourage African American students to further their educations. Dillard University was my choice because it is in New Orleans. New Orleans is a city rich with history and culture. It has so many great opportunities for young adults to learn new things.

    2. After using the Pathway to learning sheet to discover my learning style, I discovered that I have high marks in more than one category. I am a verbal-linguistic learner and I also am dominant in interpersonal and intrapersonal categories. I strongly agree with me being a verbal-linguistic learner because I am able to communicate clearly through language by reading, writing, listening, and speaking. When it comes to interpersonal and intrapersonal learning styles, I believe these are somewhat fallacies for my learning styles. Are these two styles not the exact opposites of one another? On one hand I am a person who studies alone and focuses in on self-awareness. On the other hand, I am a person who can relate to others, likes to study in groups sometimes, and likes to teach other people. How can I have both of these learning styles simultaneously?

    3. Verbal-Linguistic
Study Plan: -Write down notes in class and highlight key points
-Find and discuss topics most interesting to you
Activities: Come up with a topic you enjoy and teach a lesson on the subject

    4. Intrapersonal
Study Plan: -Study in quiet places
    -Keep a journal
    -Focus on SELF
-Work alone so you are not distracted
Activities: Create an exam for yourself, take it, grade it, and work on mistakes mistakes

    5. Interpersonal
Study Plan: -Form a study group
-Take turns teaching sections that you know
Activities: Customize game show games (ex. Jeopardy) and play them as a group group

  71. To Lauren,

I agree with your notion that you are not just a number at Dillard. Most of my classes are small and I feel comfortable enough to engage in discussions and ask questions when I dont understand something. All of my teachers have made it clear that they are here for us whenever we need help.

  72. my motivation of going to an HBCU is that i want to go to a college that had alot of black people in it so i can help them stay in it as well as myself because bad enough we dont get a chance to go to college often. when it comes to my learning style i like to be in a room with music in my ears studying. music helps me block out the world so i can be focused on one thing at a time.

  74. destini your idea of studying most be more than just flash cards and memeorization when in college people don't look at what you can recite back to them they are looking more at how well you can understand the material and how strongly you can delve in about it to create your own opinion about it.

I completely concur that we should be responsible young adults and take AT LEAST 2 HOURS of study time aside of our day. I also believe that we should not neccessarily put a TIME LIMIT on how much time we are going to take to study, because when we enrolled into Dillard University we committed to embodying excellence and nothing less; even if it means that we need to push it a little harder just to get that "A" on a Sociology test.....

1.)My mother encouraged me to attend an HBCU. My mom graduated from Alabama State University and recalls going there as one of the best experiences in her life (besides giving birth to me ofcourse..i hope) Nonetheless, I also wanted to be taught by black professors who care about blacks and higher education.
2.) After determining my learning style, I realized that I am an intrapersonal learner. It is true that I prefer to study alone, and when it comes to group work, I find myself often getting irritated by others. I know its something that I need to work on but as of today thats how I am. I like to study in quiet settings and try to apply learned information to my everyday life.

    1. I decided to attend a HBCU because it is a long standing tradition in my family and I wanted to continue on just as they all had. But i chose Dillard because of the close family oriented vibe that i got. And it really seems that everyone cares and truly here to help.

    2. well i haven't received my results from the CSI but i beleive i learn from the combining of teaching style. For instance, i learn from taking notes from the teacher, but also going back and reading the chapeter myself reinforces the information and then homework helps my understanding by giving examples or being asked to explain the information.

    3. Im still kinda workin on my study plan alittle. but i guess it would be to take my notes in class, then take seperate notes while reading the chapter, and then take notes from blackboard also. And compare all the notes and highlight the reoccuring themes i find out of the three as the most important. And take any questions i have to the teacher and the study group.

  80. 1. My motivation for attending a HBCU was to better understand my roots and be able to be around people like me, and have the same opportunities as the next student. Whereas if I were to attend a predominately white school, I probably wouldn’t have equal access to the same opportunities.
    2. I noticed that I scored mostly 19’s or 20’s on most of the sections for the learning styles assessment. I saw that when it came to working with people, visual things, and doing hands on activities I was able to give myself a higher score versus being in nature. My score were as follows:
    19- Bodily Kinesthetic
    20- Verbal Linguistic
    19- Logical Mathematical
    19- Musical
    19- Intrapersonal
    14- Interpersonal
    9- Naturalistic

  82. 1. My decision in attending a HBCU is a result of my past. I have lived in a predominately white environment ever since the fifth grade. This has made my learning experience, in my opinion, harder than most. Consequently, I decided to attend Dillard U to see if it would be easier to learn in an environment that I wasn’t constantly reminded that I was the minority.

    2. In finding out my learning style I noticed that I am more of a hands-on learner. The skills I got the highest scores in were: Bodily/Kinesthetic, Visual, Intrapersonal, and Interpersonal. There were no real fallacies everything was consistent with the way I already learn.

    3. To study: I can move and rap while I learn; pace and recite out loud, I can reflect on the personal meaning of what I am trying to learn, and I can make visual aids and use color or organize my notes.

    1. I decided to attend a HBCU because I felt that I would get the college experience of a lifetime. I knew that at an HBCU, my professors would give me the one on one attention that I desired. I felt that I would only be a number at an all white college and my needs would not be considered. I am very happy with my decision and I am happy that I chose DU.

    2. Based on the activity dealing with learning styles, my learning styles are as follows: verbal linguistic, musical, and interpersonal. I scored the most points in these three areas. These things are very true because I am a musical person. I am a voice performance major. I also loving hands on activities as well as working along with people. I don't mind lending a helping hand when necessary, and I am very good when it comes to understand situations that others may go through.

    3. Based on the information acquired in the learning style activity, I would definitely consider creating a study group where we could discuss school related topics that would help familiarize us all with the topics.

Attending an HBCU was always what I wanted to do even as a young boy. I succeeded in that goal, so now my motivationr are my desires or the future to come. What I want is way more than a high school diplomacan get me. What I need is something that only I could provide myself. What I desire is way out of this world. After becoming more intelligent determining my learning style I realized that I am rare consistent with things such as studying and daily routines. I like to do things different from every other day just to stay out of the everyday routine of things or else I will get bored and wouldnt want to do things. S ome of my consistency are very rare in ordeals such as doing hw, waking up at a certain time, or having the same free time everyday so far. Activities I might par take in would be hw but change the way I do it maybe write summaries of what I read just to see if I understood it. Second, I would probably read more to teach myself how to read faster and comprehend better. Third, in many cases there are times where we are given terms to remember and excersize in the course of the class.

  107. Week 1 Discussion Questions
    1. What was your motivation in your selection to attend a HBCU?

I didn’t have a motivation to why I chose to attend an ALL BLACK college. I just wanted to be far away from home so that I didn’t have to depend on my mom for certain things. My mom actually chose my oldest sister’s hbcu; she chose it because she wanted my sister to get out far as well! I’m glad I chose this one because now I get to learn independence and I get to learn about the whole black experience, whatever that is. It sounds interesting so I’m willing to learn more about it.

    2. After determining your learning style, what fallacies or consistencies did you notice?

After determining my learning style, I noticed a little bit more of my laziness tendencies. I would want to do work in my bed because I found it more comfortable, but then I would try to do my homework lying down. I also noticed myself doing the bare minimum and only what was required. Now that I’ve realized that this is college and the things that I were doing in high school were acceptable are not acceptable in college.

Based on my learning style I’ve realized that I need to ask more questions. I don’t ask enough questions to get me to where I need to be. After getting here, I leahrned that I could learn some of the other kids' study skills to better myself! I thought my skils were great but upon getting here I noticed that there were things that I could do to better my skills.

    Make note cards
Sit at the desk while studying
Go over material with a partner

  132. 1. For all my life, I have wanted to go to an HBCU. My mom always instilled in me that HBCU were the kind of colleges that I should go to. As I got older I realized that was true. Though my school is very diverse, not many black students succeeded, and I am including my CSP (College Studies Program) Honors and AP classes. In the CSP group, only 30 of the 150 students were black and only 5 of 30 Black kids were male. I didn't like the statistic especially when my class of 800 was 50% black and less than 5% were trying to go to college. This school gives me more hope than my high school. It makes me feel like I have a better chance of succeeding.
    2. I am a Musical-Rhythmic learner. This makes alot of sense because all of my life I have made songs out of my notes to remember them or even put memory verses to song. Plus, I always listen to music when I do homework. That is probably why I am a Music Major...LOL
    3. I am going to use my Musical method with the Intrapersonal metthod by studying by myself and listen to music at the same time.

  134. 1. My motivation attending an HBCU was easy and hard because I’ve always wanted to attend one but didn’t know which one to attend. There are plenty of HBCUs’ in the country and Dillard wasn’t my first choice. But, it became the one university that met my criteria of a school should be. I chose to attend Dillard because it’s a small institute for a students’s one on one time discussions with the professors. Also, I was looking for a school with top programs for my major, low cost, and would accept me with my credentials and offer money to attend. Buy the outcome of my choosing universities was a great idea because the professors, deans and the president are willing to help me proceed to a successful doctor.

    2. I realize throughout my year of schooling that I am a visual learner because when listening I tend to zone out and daydream but can repeat whatever a person says to me.

    3. Study every chance I get.
