    2. There's a website launched from Purdue University that shows students how to write correctly. It's called OWL. For advertising purposes, it's wonderful!

  5. I agree with Adrienne if a student results to total plagiarism then the student should receive a F for the work that they turned in because there are other alternatives if you get stuck while writing a paper besides copying someone elses work.

ScholarWord MLA Edition by Xumbrus is a very good program to help with writing papers. It helps editing and also also writing a organized essay.

De'Ja: I agree with the writing lab would be helpful, but I just think that it requires too much effort on the part of most people who would rather use plajarism.

Chilla: I do agree with you in that if people want to copy work from other people and pass it off as their own, then thats what they are going to do.

  7. 1.From my point of view, the only thing DU can do is encourage students not to do it. Explain the consequences and why it is not recommended. Also DU can motivates students to write by telling them positive things about there writing. Motivation is the key to success. Other wise i agree with Chillia and say just give them a F.

    1. some students may not know if they are plagiarizing or not, so in order for dillard to solve this problem, they should first teach us students the difference between rewording, plagiarizing and quoting.

  11. 1. First off, the university needs to realize that plagiarism is everywhere, not only at Dillard. Second, I don't think there is anything they can do about it, except for failing whomever plagiarizes. Teachers should also talk about the importance of not doing so as well, this may not stop it, but it might help.

    2. Check out Writing Fix on the web! It's a helpful site with a lot of interactive writing prompts. Free online help with prompts, lessons and workshops.

  12. Plagiarism is not good to do you should put everything you words. At some universities you may get kicked out or receive a F in the course. For example my Psychology instructor told my class that if when turn in a paper with all this big words and it looks like we did not write it ourself that we may receive a F in the course, but it is very easy to open up a thesaurus or go to thesaurus.com to get better vocabulary words and word choices other than the words that we been using in high school to write our papers. No matter if instructors realize it or not students always plagiarize or going to.

There are many helpful writing tools online. For example poynter online and essayplan.com These websites and many more would help you write your paper and increase writing skills. Most students dont realize it but microsoft word is very helpful and makes writing mmore easier.

    2.I've used OWL before.

Dorreall- thats a good idea, but i think if your writing is not good even changing a few words wouldn't be enough to convince a teacher you did the work

  16. 1. i think that it has been made very clear the consequences of plagarism. i wouldn't go as far as expulsion but failing the class is minor for this.

    2. Owlpurdue is an internet tool for students to use when writing to help make it more muscled and cut out scaffolding. Dr. Mell, my english teacher, recommended that to her students.

  17. I think there is no way to solve the problem of plagiarism on DU’s campus. If a student is caught plagiarizing the professor should give the student a F for the semester. If the student has a problem writing they should seek help by going to the writing center that is available on campus.

The Writing Center Online is a writing tool that has prepared a series of hand-outs about different aspects of the writing procees. I would recommend this helpful tool to all students that is having trouble writing.

    ReplyDelete
  18. 1) To begin with I honestly feel that students are constantly plagiarizing because there are not serious enough consequences behind the wrong doing. Instead of just a failing grade, those who choose to plagiarize should be failed all together, fined, and also thrown out of their current institution.

    2) Smart Author is a very helpful software that helps develop professional essays, research reports, articles, etc.

@ Dominique, I agree there some students who lack the ability to distinguish the difference between rewording and plagiarizing.

@ Lauren, great suggestion, but I’m more than positive writing assignments aren't going anywhere... So I guess the university will have to live with the fact that plagiarism is here to stay, rather they approve of it or not.

@ De'ja, I am aware of how effective the help in the writing center is, but what I do know is that students are often encouraged to go and seek extra help at the writing center. The majority of the time they go against this advice. I’m saying this just to say students should begin taking advantage of the writing center as resources available to them.

  25. - i think nothing can be done about plagiarism. All the university can do is warn the students and let them know what the consequences are. After that it is the students choice.

-there are many helpful online sites thatwill help student with writing skills.
Essay plan, dictionary.com, and the writers lab are all helpful.

  26. jamie, i agree with you, people are going to do it even if you warn them

  27. 1.) Well, just as Dominique mentioned, i believe th 1st step is making sure that all students are fully aware of the differentiation between plagiarism, quoting, and rewording. I know it may sound funny, but even at the college level, many students still don't know the difference. Secondly, the reality of the situation is that no matter how much its emphasized or how severe the consequences may be, the fact is some people will still do it for one reason or another, whether it be because they can't possibly think of enough information to write a 15 page paper, there isn't enough time to do an essay, or simply because a person is just too lazy, it will still exist. The sad thing however is due to the advancing of technology, there is really no way to prevent this issue.

    2. Adverstisement: Are you in need of help when writing essays? Is hard for you to get the writing process started when told to write a persuasive essay? 36. 1.Plagiarism is a serious offense with technology being so available, provided your ideas for solving this problem on Dillard University’s campus.

Plagiarism, done purposely, is a serious offense. Some people blatantly disregard the morals and values that they should have when writing papers. However, some plagarism is done accidently because students do not know the proper methods of citing sources.

2.Research writing tools on the web. Write an advertisement for the product and post your findings.

The best writing tool that I have found and that I use often is the Online Writing Lab (OWL) on the Purdue University website. Although it is an university website, anyone can access the website. The OWL is a great writing tool because it has helpful tips and guidelines for citing sources in several formats including MLA, APA, and others. It breaks down the information into different sections so you don't have to spend all your time searching the whole site to find the specific topic you need help with. The OWL has helped me to effectively cite and give credit to any work in my papers that was not my own. I strongly recommend this site to my peers.

    @ Lauren Lemonious

The OWL is a great tool! It os my favorite website to get help with my papers.

    @ Chillia

Although students who purposely plagerize should be punished, I sometimes had problems with citing sources so I feel the professor should use his/her discretion to determine whether or not the plagarism is intentional.

    @ Chardai Grays

Prewriting is a way to definitely avoid plagarism. If you do your work on time, you will be less likely to rush and stick information you find online into your paper. If you don't procrastinate you will have more time to formulate your own ideas.

To solve the problem for plagiarism on Dillard University's campus I think that the university should enforce the policy on plagiarism. I think that students that plagiarize should be put on academic probation, and the third strike should be expulsion from the university. The professors and anyone else in authority should enforce these acts.

This website (http://www.greece.k12.ny.us/instruction/ELA/6-12/tools/index.htm) is a GREAT writing tool.

  39. 1. At my high school all students were required to submit all typed information to a website called turnitin.com. And what this website did was measure the level of plagerism in the paper...I honestly feel as though this website should not be needed, because students should feel a sense of self-worth and understanding of the value of hard-work...I know i wouldn't want anyone to think that my thoughts were someone elses...or that my own thoughts weren't good enough, because essentially that is what plagerism is saying..."my mind isn't smart enough so let me take someone's thoughts"....O NO!!!

#1) Plagiarism is a very serious offense that isn't just a problem here at Dillard, but also a problem at many other universities across the nation. Most high schools should have at least informed their students that if you do decide to plagiarize in college, what the consequence might be. After attending three different high schools myself, I've gotten backthe same answer: that there is zero tolerance for plagiarism on the collegiate level. After that has already been instilled in you, you tend not to even consider plagiarism as an option. Zero Tolerance should be enforced, we're adults, and should be held accountable.

#2)Dr. Mell redundantly reminds us of the infamous cite she loves, and would love for us to use it, "OWL." It a resource that helps you outline your writing, and makes it easier to write a paper. Pretty useful might I add.

The only real way to prevent plagiarism is to do your own work correctly.

    To Bridget,

I feel ya on the hard work thing and for those of us who do our own work it seems disrespectful to make us turn in our work at a website that checks for plagiarism.

    To Bianca,

Now I know of some people who got jail time for plagiarizing so I dont think its because of the degree of punishment but more towards the enforcement of it.

  47. 1) To solve the Plagiarism problem on the campus of Dillard University we can start by implementing systems on the computers that track when something is copied, pasted and saved. The also are other programs for computers that allow teachers to find out when something is plagiarised.

    2) Writing a book, play or screenplay can be a writer's organizational nightmare. Creative writing software manages plot, character, settings and conflicts so all you have to do is create.

  48. 1. Wikipedia, Google, Yahoo, and Ask.com are just a few of the many websites students use when plagiarizing their work. Though universities have strict penalties in regard to academic dishonesty, incidents of cheating and plagiarism occur because students lack academic motivation, the use of technology aids in plagiarism/cheating, and cheating/plagiarism allows one to maximize test performance. We all know that cheating/plagiarism is prevalent in universities no matter what the penalties may be if one is caught. There is no one solution to bring to a halt academic dishonesty completely, but instructors can instill in their students how it is wrong to plagiarize/cheat and build trust with students so that they feel obligated to work hard in their papers.
    2. Google Docs is a well known tool used via Google to share documents online. A few perks about Google apps is that you can create spreadsheets, upload existing files and edit them online, store work there, and much more. 1.)Plagiarsm is inevitable. Many teachers, professors, instructors, etc. for mnay years have tried to stop plagiarsm of students. in result, students are to cheat regardless. As long as their are test there is going to be a form of cheating in schools. The ways to encourage students to not cheat is by giving them extra or extended help in class. Also, the teachers could make it mandatory for each student to meet with them during school hours at least once a week. The teacher could monitor the student practicing various excercies of the material that was covered in class that week.

    1. Its ard to tell when someone is going to plagerise. Most people will use something that is off campus instead of on capus because its a small school. I dont think it would work. Students would just think of a more creative way of getting it dne.

  62. 1. I really don't think there are way to stop someone from plagiarism. Everyone has their own opinion about how they feel on this subject matter, i can't really say what to do should you fail that person or not. because if someone has cited their paper should at least get graded fairly because they did acknowledge the write. but, on the other hand if someone is trying to abuse to previledge of another writers work as their own i think they shld seek help instead.

    2. i really don't know i have never used any sources to help me write a paper when i got stuck. sorry

1.From my point of view, the only thing DU can do is encourage students not to do it. Explain the consequences and why it is not recommended. Also DU can motivates students to write by telling them positive things about there writing. Motivation is the key to success. Other wise i agree with Chillia and say just give them a F.

    2. Writing tools, such as acdemic notes and compare and contrast can be very helpful. Acdemic writing is a note taking page with helpful reminders that assist students while studying.
